Nurses use math every day in practice. The ability to accurately calculate medication dosages, IV rates, intake and output, determine percentages, etc. is an essential nursing competency critical to patient safety. This policy outlines a systematic plan for infusing math/medication calculations throughout the undergraduate nursing curriculum. This policy is designed to establish minimal levels of math proficiency required to progress through the nursing program as well as to promote continued development in math calculations as students’ transition into professional practice.
The concepts of medication calculations and math used in nursing practice are introduced to all
students in the fundamental lab course. Medication calculations exams will be included in the course and a benchmark of 90% must be reached to be considered successful. Two attempts will be allowed to reach this benchmark, with remediation with faculty. If unsuccessful after Exam 2, the student will remediate with the BSN Program Director and take Exam 3. A student will also be placed on a Student Performance Notification for Medication Calculation Clinical Monitoring, which will remain in effect for one year from the time of the successful attempt. A student may not administer medications in the first clinical course until the 90% benchmark is achieved. Not passing after 4 attempts will affect being successful in the first clinical course. To help maintain competency, medication calculations on exams and medication calculation worksheets will be provided throughout the curriculum. To help support a student who is struggling at any point in the curriculum (exams or clinical), faculty may recommend a Student Performance Notification and PASS plan.
